Stop Chasing Every AI Tool. Learn One Really Well.

Everywhere I look right now, somebody is recommending another AI tool.

“This one is better than ChatGPT.”

“Use this one for coding.”

“This one makes better videos.”

“This one is cheaper.”

“This one will replace that one.”

And maybe some of those comparisons are right.

But I've started wondering if we're asking the wrong question.

Instead of constantly asking “Which AI is the best?”, maybe a better question is:

“How good am I at using the AI I already have?”

You Can't Master Everything at Once

There are simply too many AI applications appearing too quickly for the average person to seriously test all of them.

You can watch reviews.

You can compare features.

You can read what other people say.

But actually learning a tool is different.

Learning comes from using it over and over again.

There is a famous quote commonly attributed to Bruce Lee:

“I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times.”

Whether we apply that exact quote to martial arts, business, or AI, I think the lesson makes sense.

Repetition creates skill.

And I'm beginning to see that happen with AI.

I'm Not Trying to Become an Expert in Every AI

I'm doing almost the opposite.

I've been spending most of my time learning a small number of tools—particularly ChatGPT and Codex.

Codex is becoming one of the tools I turn to when I'm working with code, websites, applications, troubleshooting, and technical projects.

ChatGPT has become the place where I think through ideas, research questions, develop content, organize projects, write, and figure out what to do next.

What surprised me is how much can be accomplished without constantly jumping to another application.

Website work.

Content creation.

Writing.

Research.

Planning.

Troubleshooting.

Learning new subjects.

Working remotely from another device.

And I'm still discovering things these tools can do.

The Tool Gets Better — But So Do You

Here's something that doesn't get discussed enough.

Sometimes when people say:

“AI is getting better,”

part of what they're experiencing might actually be that they are getting better at using it.

You learn how to explain what you want.

You learn what information the AI needs.

You learn when to give it more freedom and when to give very specific instructions.

You learn its weaknesses.

You learn how to verify its work.

You develop workflows.

You even start recognizing when the AI is going in the wrong direction before it gets very far.

That's not just the AI improving.

That's a human developing a skill.

Maybe AI Is Becoming a New Kind of Trade

Think about traditional tools.

A professional welder doesn't become great because he owns 30 welding machines.

A photographer doesn't become great because she downloads every editing program.

A carpenter doesn't become a master because he owns every saw at Home Depot.

The tool matters.

But knowing the tool matters more.

AI may work the same way.

The person who understands one powerful AI system extremely well might accomplish far more than someone who has accounts with 20 different AI applications but barely understands any of them.

I'm Still Learning

I'm not an AI expert.

Laptop Incomes isn't an AI research laboratory, and I'm not trying to declare which company has built the world's best model.

I'm simply curious about what an ordinary person can accomplish with these tools.

So my approach for now is simple:

Choose a capable tool.

Use it.

Build something with it.

Make mistakes.

Learn what it can and can't do.

Use it again.

And repeat.

Once you really understand one tool, learning the next one should become easier because you're no longer starting from zero. You already understand how to work with AI.

Maybe the advantage in the AI era won't belong to the person who has tried the most tools.

Maybe it will belong to the person who learned how to use a few of them extraordinarily well.

Don't just collect AI tools. Build AI skills.
